Mercer's Wood Academy implements Spanish language instruction as part of its National Curriculum requirements for Key Stage 2 (KS2). Using the Language Angels scheme, the program develops pupils’ skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar. The goal is to foster passion, curiosity, and confidence in language learning while preparing students for further study.
The curriculum emphasizes authentic communication, comprehension, and cultural exploration. Students learn to understand spoken and written Spanish, engage in conversations, and express themselves accurately. They are also taught grammatical structures, pronunciation, and vocabulary-building strategies. Cultural education is integrated to compare Spanish-speaking cultures with their own, enhancing their global awareness and identity.
Lessons are conducted by class teachers in 30-minute weekly sessions, supplemented by shorter practice activities. The teaching approach includes interactive materials, games, songs, and differentiated worksheets to engage diverse learning styles and accommodate special educational needs (SEN) students. Classroom displays reinforce learning through visual aids.
By the end of KS2, pupils are expected to respond to spoken and written language, engage in basic conversations, write creatively, and understand fundamental grammar concepts. The program aims to build a solid foundation for students’ continued language learning journey.
